HACP Proddly Recognized the Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act

The Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh (HACP) would like to dedicate this month’s newsletter in honor of the memory of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and to pay tribute to passage of the Fair Housing Act by providing a general overview of the history and purpose of the Act. The legislation of the Fair Housing Act, a subsidiary of the Civil Rights Act, was finally passed on April 11, 1968, after much advocacy. This Act serves as a fitting memorial to the life’s work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was assassinated just days prior on April 4, 1968, and as a result, President Lyndon B. Johnson utilized this national tragedy to urge Congress for the speedy passage of this bill. The purpose of this legislation was to prohibit discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin when people and/or companies engaged in the following types of transactions: the sale, rental and/or financing of a dwelling.
