Clean Slate E3 Commits to Providing $200,000 in Scholarships by 2022

March 5, 2018

Clean Slate E3, the nonprofit affiliate of The Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh (HACP), is pleased to announce that it is prepared to provide up to 10 scholarships to residents of HACP housing for the 2018/ 2019 academic year – a commitment of $200,000 over the next four years.

Clean Slate E3 will administer the scholarship program in partnership with NEED who will provide a 20 percent match on each scholarship, bringing the total amount of the annual commitment to $50,000 per year or $5,000 per student. The organization has also committed to increasing the per student scholarship allocation from $2,250 to $5,000 in order to maximize impact.

HACP established Clean Slate E3 roughly 10 years ago in order to expand potential funding sources for activities that enrich the lives of HACP residents, including but not limited to: job training, educational enhancement and scholarships. Since 2009, Clean Slate E3 has provided HACP residents with scholarships for post-secondary education. During that time, Clean Slate E3 has issued more than $190,000 in scholarship funds. The organization has managed its scholarship program in partnership with NEED since 2012.

“Clean Slate E3 aims to assist the most deserving public housing residents to achieve self-sufficiency through educational advancement. We have hundreds of exceptional students in our communities who depend on scholarship dollars to advance their education and we are extremely pleased to be able to contribute toward their growth,” said Clean Slate E3 President Caster D. Binion.

The newly announced scholarship opportunity has been made possible by a grant agreement between the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh and Clean Slate E3 that will provide the non-profit with an infusion of $217,177 to be allocated exclusively for scholarships.

“With these funds Clean Slate E3 will more than double its committed funding for scholarship opportunity within the next four years in an effort to help our residents manage the increasing cost of college tuition,” Binion said.

According to Dr. Marcia M. Sturdivant, NEED President and CEO, “Our partnership with the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh and Clean Slate E3 will provide unprecedented opportunities for aspiring public housing residents. NEED values Clean Slate’s continued commitment to the students we serve. This funding will turn dreams into real opportunities for a brighter future.”

Clean Slate E3 is currently accepting applications from residents of HACP housing and encourages any graduating senior or family of a graduating senior within the HACP system to apply for the opportunity. Scholarship applications are available at: http://www.hacp.org/resident-services/e3 and questions about availability and/or requirements may be directed to cleanslatee3@gmail.com. The deadline to apply for the 2018/ 2019 academic year is June 15, 2018.
